ReplyDeleteI enjoyed God of Carnage enormously. It was witty and smart from start to finish. Not easy laughs but complicated, intelligent laughs that involved me in the true pathos of the situation. The cast was perfect. All of them were new to me but I hope to see them again on Boston stages. And more plays from this playwright please!
ReplyDeleteWe saw the replacement cast on Broadway after our scheduled performance of the original was canceled because of Gandolfini's illness a year earlier. We went because we like Yasmina Reza. The Huntington production we saw Sunday night was so much better than the one in NYC. Wonderful set and staging, and simply brilliant acting by the quartet. To read yesterday that Day broke her hand the day before was stunning. The chemistry on stage was so good nothing could diminish it. We were not excited about seeing this play again so soon, but you made it a season highlight!
ReplyDeleteI had the pleasure of seeing “God of Carnage” on January 8. A week or so later, I saw the film starring Jodi Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz (sp?). I had wondered if it might be even better with these big stars. What I found was that I enjoyed the live performance so much more. The actors at the Huntington are superb and were funnier. The scenery was even better – no bean bag chair in the film- the theater apartment was better in total.

A fabulous ensemble having a great time and acting up a storm, and in the process giving an empty, pseudo-intellectual play a strong production. Reza's piece is a Jerry Springer spectacle, not a play. The characters have no real motivation, but boy does the piece give the actors a chance to put on a show.
